The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic crisis have created additional challenges for people experiencing homelessness in Austin. Resources have become more difficult to come by and avenues to subsist are dwindling. The situation is expected to get worse with tens of thousands of Austinites losing their jobs. Estimates predict a 40-45% increase in homelessness nationwide by the end of 2020..' Study by Dr. Brendan O'Flaherty, Columbia University Since unhoused people are more at risk for COVID-19 than housed people, the increase in the size of the homeless population will likely prolong the health crisis.' StreetSenseMedia.org Our goal is to produce 5,000 face masks for them by raising $35,000 to cover material and labor costs.
